Fourteen Big 12 track & field athletes combined for nine national titles at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships held at Texas A&M’s Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium, capping an impressive indoor season for the conference.
Texas Tech’s Sally Kipyego captured her ninth NCAA title with a top finish in the women’s 5,000-meter run (15:51.14), becoming just the second runner in NCAA history to win nine individual crowns. She is the first female Division I athlete to win three straight 5,000 indoor titles.
Fellow distance runner Jenny Barringer of Colorado set a collegiate record in the 3,000-meter run, recording a time of 8:42.03 for the third national title of her career.
Big 12 teams swept the 4x400-meter relays, beginning with the Baylor men. BU’s corps of Trey Harts, Marcus Boyd, LeJerald Betters and Quentin Iglehart-Summers took home the national title after clocking a time of 3:05.91. The Bears have won five consecutive and nine overall NCAA championships in the 4x400. Harts also finished first in the 200-meter dash, running a personal-best 20.63.
Texas A&M’s 4x400 relay team ? Allison George, Sandy Wooten, Porscha Lucas and Jessica Beard ? coasted to a win on the women’s side with a time of 3:32.52.
Jacob Hernandez of Texas, the reigning NCAA outdoor champion in the men’s 800-meter run, tallied a 1:48.04 in the indoor event to grab the title.
In the field events, Destinee Hooker (Texas) posted a mark of 6.5-5 to break a nine-year collegiate record and claim the women’s high jump crown. Scott Sellers (Kansas State) earned his second national title in the men’s high jump with a mark of 7-4.5, while Nebraska’s Nicholas Gordon won the men’s long jump with a personal-best 26-4.25.
Three women’s teams (Texas A&M, Texas and Texas Tech) and two men’s squads (Baylor and Nebraska) finished in the top 10 in their respective standings. The Aggie women were national runners-up with 37 points, placing behind only Tennessee (42) for the finest NCAA indoor finish in program history.
The Big 12 was also well represented in the USTFCCCA’s postseason awards, as Jenny Barringer (Colorado) was named was named Women’s Track Athlete of the Year, and Destinee Hooker was honored as Women’s Field Athlete of the Year. In addition, Texas A&M assistant coach Vince Anderson was tabbed Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year.
