Four Schools Garner Week 2 Baseball Honors
Oklahoma’s Tanner Tredaway earned Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week, while TCU’s Johnny Ray garnered Pitcher of the Week in the second week of the season. Kansas’ Everhett Hazelwood and Oklahoma State’s Caeden Trenkle shared Newcomer of the Week. A five-person panel of team radio broadcasters selects the honorees.
Tredaway hit .500 (12-of-24) with a 1.125 slugging percentage in games against Texas Southern and Illinois State. Eight of his 12 hits went for extra bases, including a pair of homers. He led the Big 12 last week in hits (12), triples (3), total bases (27), runs scored (7) and home runs (2).
After issuing a one-out walk in the first, Ray retired the next 21 Minnesota batters he faced. He threw TCU’s first complete-game shutout since May 2018. The junior retired 25-of-29 batters faced in the victory. Only one batter reached second base in the game for the Gophers and he never faced more than four batters in an inning.
Hazelwood registered a season-high 12 strikeouts in a 13-4 win over Charleston Southern, while surrendering just one walk in his first DI career victory. The junior is tied for the Big 12 lead with 18 strikeouts on the season.
Trenkle recorded multiple hits in all three games against UTRGV and was 7-for-10 at the plate with two home runs, two triples and a team-high six RBIs. The freshman homered in each of the final two games of the series, delivering his first-career round tripper on Saturday, before going 2-for-2 at the plate in the finale with a home run, triple, walk, stolen base and four RBIs.
