K-State Sweeps Penultimate Men’s Basketball Awards

After completing season sweeps of Baylor and Oklahoma State, Kansas State also swept the penultimate Big 12 men’s basketball awards as Markquis Nowell was named Player of the Week and Keyontae Johnson picked up Newcomer of the Week. Johnson was recognized for the fifth time this season while Nowell earned his third honor.

Nowell averaged 18 points, 9.0 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals in 38.5 minutes per game last week. He went a near-perfect 19-of-20 from the free throw line, including 10-of-10 vs. Baylor. The senior guard collected his sixth double-double in the 75-65 win over No. 9/10 BU with 14 points and 10 assists. He became the 12th Division I player since 1996-97 to post at least 10 assists with zero turnovers vs. an AP Top 10 opponent and the first Wildcat to do it in any game in school history. Nowell had a solid all-around game in the 73-68 win at Oklahoma State. He led all players with 22 points to go with game-highs in both assists (8) and steals (4) as well as a team-high-tying five rebounds in nearly 39 minutes. It was Nowell’s team-leading 10th 20-point game of the season, including his ninth in Big 12 play. He eclipsed 1,800 career points in the win over OSU.

Johnson averaged 21 points on 60 percent shooting, including 55.6 percent from 3-point range, to go with 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 38.5 minutes per game. He led all scorers with 25 points in the win over No. 9/10 Baylor, hitting on 11-of-17 field goals, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range in nearly 39 minutes. It was his eighth 20-point game, including his fifth in Big 12 play. The senior forward scored 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range in the victory at OSU. He added a team-high-tying five rebounds, one assist and one steal in nearly 39 minutes to become the 33rd player in school history to top 500 points in a single season.
