Big 12 South Division Scenarios And Tiebreaking Process

Oklahoma's 65-21 victory over Texas Tech Saturday night sets up the possibility of a three-way tie in the South Division.

Texas Tech can do no worse than share the title with a win over Baylor in its final game. The Red Raiders hold the tiebreak over Texas in the event of a two-way tie.

Texas wins outright with a win over Texas A&M, coupled with a Texas Tech loss to Baylor. The Longhorns can share the title at 7-1 if Oklahoma and/or Texas Tech win its last game OR at 6-2 if Oklahoma and Texas Tech both lose its last game. UT holds the tiebreak over Oklahoma in the event of a two-way tie.

Oklahoma wins outright with a win against Oklahoma State, coupled with a Texas Tech loss to Baylor AND a Texas loss to Texas A&M. They can share the title at 7-1 or 6-2 depending on what UT and Tech does down the stretch. The Sooners possess the tiebreak over Texas Tech in the event of a two-way tie.

Oklahoma State can claim no better than a share of the title with a win against Oklahoma coupled with a Texas Tech loss to Baylor AND a Texas loss to Texas A&M. However OSU can not play in the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship at 6-2 in the Division as it does not possess the tiebreak in any scenario with other potential 6-2 South teams.

The following procedure will determine the representative from each division in the event of a tie:

  1. If two teams are tied, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative
  2. If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 7 will be followed until a determination is made. If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative.
    1. The records of the three teams will be compared against each other
    2. The records of the three teams will be compared within their division
    3. The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of fi nish (4, 5 and 6)
    4. The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents;
    5. The highest ranked team in the fi rst Bowl Championship Series Poll following the completion of Big 12 regular season conference play shall be the representative
    6. The team with the best overall winning percentage [excluding exempted games] shall be the representative
    7. The representative will be chosen by draw.
The Big 12 tiebreaking procedure was approved by the Conference's athletics directors, and is reviewed regularly. The use of the BCS Standings to break ties between three or more teams was added prior to the 1998 season, the first year of the BCS. The BCS Standings are a quantitative formula approved by the I-A commissioners to rank teams for BCS consideration and determine the two that play for the national championship. Its use in the Big 12 tiebreaking process occurs when other steps in the process are unable to break a tie to determine the team(s) that plays in the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship.
