Aggies Fall to No. 3 Portland in NCAA Quarterfinal Action, 4-1

PORTLAND, Ore.--Christine Sinclair and Betsy Barr each scored two goals to lead No. 3 Portland past No. 5 Texas A&M in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA women's soccer tournament in front of 2,139 fans at Merlo Field, Sunday.

With the win, the Pilots advance to the NCAA Women's College Cup for the sixth time in the last eight seasons and their record improves to 20-3-0. The Aggies finished the season with a record of 17-4-1 after making their first trip to the quarterfinals in the program's nine-year history.

"I am very proud of our team and our senior class for getting us over the hump after making it to the Sweet 16 four times," head coach G. Guerrieri said. "We have a good group of underclassmen coming back and the future is very bright for Texas A&M soccer. Portland is a good team and they deserved to win the game today."

Barr scored the game-winner 11 minutes into the second half on a brilliant cross by Kristen Moore. Barr hit a diving header past Angela Barker, who replaced starting goalkeeper Esther Thompson to start the second half.

"We put Angela (Barker) in to start the second half because she is a little taller and a little better on defending crosses and corners," Guerrieri said. "All three of their second-half goals were tremendous goals. We could have had three keepers in the game and they probably would have scored all three of their goals."

Texas A&M took the early lead when Linsey Johnson scored her 17th goal of the season in the eighth minute. Amanda Burke played a ball to Emma Smith inside the 18-yard box. Smith, the Beaverton, Ore., native making only her second start of the season, one-timed a pass to a streaking Johnson who beat the keeper low and to left. Portlandhad not allowed a goal in their three previous NCAA Tournament games.

Sinclair scored the equalizer for Portland in the 15th minute of the match with her 22nd goal of the year. Sinclair outran the Aggie defense on a ball played over the top from the midfield. Sinclair, one-on-one against Aggie goalkeeper Esther Thompson, blasted a shot that slipped through Thompson's hands and rolled toward the goal. Sinclair finished the play with an uncontested shot into the open net.

Sinclair and Barr each scored their second goals of the game in the 67th and 72nd minutes, respectively, to give the Pilots the 4-1 win.
