Big 12 Conference Announces Soccer Players of the Week

Nov. 5, 2002

DALLAS -- Texas A&M's Emma Smith and Kati Jo Spisak, and Oklahoma State's Jeni Jackson were named Big 12 Soccer Players of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Smith was Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, Jackson was Defensive Player of the Week, and Spisak was Newcomer of the Week.

Smith was named Offensive Player of the Week after playing a part in both of Texas A&M's goals in the 2-1 win over No. 3 Texas. The win earned the Aggies the Big 12 championship. The sophomore forward from Beaverton, Ore., scored A&M's first goal and assisted on the game-winner. The goal was Smith's eighth of the season and the assist was her fourth.

Jackson, a sophomore defender, was named Defensive Player of the Week after notching a hat trick to lead Oklahoma State to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Oklahoma. The victory clinched OSU its first berth in the Big 12 Soccer Tournament. The Broken Arrow, Okla., native scored all three goals in the final 5:49 of the contest. Jackson has started all 28 games of her career. The three goals were her first career scores. The hat trick was the first for OSU since Robin Rampey had one in the 1996 win over OU.

Spisak, a freshman goalkeeper from Manchester, Mo., recorded six saves and allowed only one goal in Texas A&M's win over Texas to earn Newcomer of the Week. All six saves were recorded in the second half. The biggest of the six was when she stymied a penalty kick taken by Kati McBain to preserve the Aggies' two-goal lead. A&M went on to win the match 2-1.

All three of this week's honorees will be playing in the Big 12 Tournament Nov. 7, 8, 10 in San Antonio, Texas, at Blossom Soccer Complex. Tickets are $5 per day and can be purchased at the stadium or statewide in Texas through Ticketmaster.
