Gooden Goes To Grizzlies In First Round Of 2002 NBA Draft

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Former University of Kansas All-American Drew Gooden was selected in the first round of the 2002 NBA Draft, going to the Memphis Grizzlies with the fourth overall pick on Wednesday night in New York's Madison Square Garden.

Gooden becomes the highest-drafted player out of KU since Raef LaFrentz was taken by the Denver Nuggets with the No. 3 pick in 1998. He is the 13th Jayhawk to go in the first round of the draft, and the eighth KU player under Jayhawk coach Roy Williams to be taken in round one.

A native of Richmond, Calif., Gooden led KU and the Big 12 Conference in scoring and rebounding last season, averaging 19.8 points and 11.4 boards per game. He led the Jayhawks in scoring 20 times and in rebounding 28 times en route to a Kansas single-season record 25 double-doubles. Gooden, the only Jayhawk to score in double-figures in every game in 2001-02, shot 50.4 percent from the field and 75.5 percent from the line while leading the team and ranking third in the Big 12 with 1.8 steals per game.

For his career, Gooden ranks 12th on the all-time scoring list with 1,526 points and fifth on KU's all-time rebounds chart with 905 career boards. He is just the second player in Kansas history (joining Danny Manning) to record at least 1,500 points, 900 rebounds, 100 blocks and 100 steals in a career.

"I really did expect Drew to not go past fourth," Williams said. "Three or four weeks ago I thought Golden State would take him. As time went down I thought Golden State would take (Mike) Dunleavy. I thought that Memphis would take Drew, and I was not surprised. I would have probably been really disappointed if they had not taken Drew. I think they (Memphis) got a player who has versatility and can play more than one position. He is going to do some great things in Memphis. I am looking forward to going back there and watching him play."

Gooden will join six former Jayhawks in the NBA next season -- LaFrentz (Dallas), Manning (free agent), Greg Ostertag (Utah), Paul Pierce (Boston), Scot Pollard (Sacramento) and Jacque Vaughn (Atlanta).
