DALLAS--Several potential 2005 All-America standouts and Nebraska head coach Mike Anderson (Big 12 Coach of the Year) have earned 2005 All-Big 12 Conference and Player of the Year honors.
Anderson, who guided Nebraska to the co-2005 conference championship along with Baylor head coach Steve Smith at 19-8 each in Big 12 play, took Nebraska to a 46-12 overall mark prior to the Phillips 66 Big 12 postseason tournament and within six wins of a school-high 52 wins in one season.
His standout third baseman Alex Gordon, a 2004 All-America choice and '05 BASEBALL AMERICA Preseason National Player of the Year was selected by the coaches as Big 12 Player of the Year. Missouri standout Max Scherzer was tabbed as 2005 Big 12 Pitcher of the Year.
NU pitcher Johnny Dorn was selected as Freshman Pitcher of the Year while Oklahoma State true freshman OF Corey Brown was named '05 Freshman Player of the Year. Newcomer of the Year honors went to Nebraska pitcher Joba Chamberlain.
Big 12 head coaches also voted to acknowledge former Texas A&M head coach Mark Johnson (1985-2005) as Honorary Coach of the Year after a 21-season career with the Aggies and four decades in the college coaching profession at four different universities. The group gave a similar commendation to Iowa State head coach Lyle Smith then the Cyclones dropped varsity baseball at the end of the 2001 campaign.
