WACO, Texas - The Texas men's and women's outdoor track & fi eld teams swept the 2006 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Hart-Patterson Track & Field Complex in Waco, Texas. UT's Brian Robison and Marshevet Hooker earned the high point awards with 20 and 32.5 points, respectively. This is Hooker's second time to receive the award and Robison's first.
The Longhorn men claim their fourth Big 12 team title with 135 points and top finishes in the shot put, 110-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash during the fi nal day of competition. UT's Jamaal Charles posted a top finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.23, while teammate Robison defended his Big 12 title in the shot put with a throw of 68-03.05 and his second title of the weekend.
Oklahoma's Cale Drumwright won his first outdoor title in the javelin with a throw of 228-06. The junior became OU's first outdoor javelin winner in Big 12 history. Teammate Scott Martin defeated the 2005 and 2003 champions (Gable Baldwin, NU and Bobby Most, TTU) in the pole vault to claim his first title at 17-05.50.
In the triple jump, Daniel Roper (Nebraska) defeated the 2004 champion, Stelios Kapsalis of Kansas State, to win his first outdoor title. Teammate Mark Harrison won the 400-meter hurdles in 50.46 and Nate Probasco claimed the 200-meter title (20.86). Both athletes were first time conference champs.
Baylor's 4x100-meter relay team (Jerome Miller, Reggie Witherspoon, Queito Teasley and Jacob Norman) took home their second Big 12 4x100 relay title (1998) with a time of 39:41. Witherspoon also won the 400-meter dash conference championship title, his first, with a time of (45.90). R.J. Anderson, Kevin Mutai, Witherspoon and Quentin Summers won Baylor's ninth 4x400-meter relay (3:06.58).
Pete Janson (Colorado) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time 8:44.76, while teammate Stephen Pifer posted a time of 3:40.70 to claim the 1,500-meter Big 12 title and set a new conference championship record (2002, 3:42.91). CU's Bret Schoolmeester posted a 14:06.48 to claim his first Big 12 title in the 5000-meter.
Christian Smith (Kansas State) broke last years' stadium record (1:47.32) and won the 800-meter run (1:46.49), while Texas Tech's Marlon Odom defended his 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13:73.
Texas claim their sixth conference team title with 131 points on the women's side with a first-place finish in the high jump, 400-meter relay, 100-meter dash and 400-meter hurdles during the fi nal day of competition.
Hooker defended her title and broke her own Big 12 Championship record in the 100-meter (11.09). She also defended her title in the 200-meter dash (22.75). Teammate and sister Destinee Hooker won her first outdoor conference high jump title and broke the conference championship record with a fi nal height of 6-02.25. UT's defending champion, Melaine Walker, set a stadium record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.44, while the Longhorn's 4x100-meter relay team (LaTishia Kerr, Alexandria Anderson, Walker and Hooker) won UT's 10th 4x100 title (43.43).
Nebraska's defending Big 12 Champion Kayla Wilkinson won her second title in the javelin with a distance of 177-07, while teammate Priscilla Lopes (Nebraska) defended her 2005 100-meter hurdles conference title and set a stadium record (1997, 12.70) with a time of 12.63. Becky Breisch of Nebraska claimed her third outdoor discuss Big 12 championship and broke her own conference championship record (2002, 182-08) with a throw of 194-01.
Mary Davies of Oklahoma State claimed two Big 12 medals and set two records. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Davies claimed her first Big 12 Championship and broke the 2005 Big 12 record (10:14.89) with a time of 10:09.42. The sophomore won the 500-meter and set a stadium record with a time of 16:16.54.
Marianne Schlachter (Kansas State) posted a 42-00.00 to win the triple jump. Lauren Tillman, Kandace Tucker, Katrina Taylor, Angel Perkins won BU's second Big 12 title in the 4x400 relays (3:33.25). Missouri's Amanda Bales posted a time of 4:21.21 in the 1,500-meter run to earn her first conference title. Texas A&M's Clora Williams won the 400-meter dash title in a time of 51.95, while Texas Tech's Althea Chambers defeated the 2005 champion to claim her first conference 800-meter title.
The Big 12 schools will compete at regionals in Austin, Texas, May 26-27, with the University of Texas as host. The 2006 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex on the Sacramento State University campus June 7-10.
