Kansas Defeats Nebraska and Wins First Big 12 Baseball Championship

OKLAHOMA CITY--The Kansas Jayhawks defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers, 9-7, to win its first ever Big 12 Baseball Championship at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City on Sunday.

The Kansas Jayhawks (42-23) used 12 hits to score nine runs. The Cornhuskers (42-15) fall to 4-2 in Big 12 Championship games.

The Jayhawks scored the first run of the game in the top of the second when catcher Buck Afenir scored Preston Land on an RBI single.

Kansas kept the pressure on Nebraska with four runs in the second. Ritchie Price got the inning started with a double and was later driven in, along with Jared Schweitzer, by Erik Morrison.

The Huskers got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Andrew Brown scored Ryan Wehrle on a single. At the next at bat, Brown would score on a Andy Gerch triple.

KU countered with two runs in the fifth. Jared Schweitzer added his ninth home run of the season to move the Jayhawk lead to 8-2.

Kansas picked up its final run in the top of the eighth.

The Nebraska bats started to pick up in the eighth when Wehrle hit a two run blast to score Nick Jaros and Brown scored on an Jeff Christy single up the middle.

The Huskers attempted to rally in the bottom of the ninth as NU scored two runs with two outs and had runners on first and second but Don Czyz was brought in to close out the game for the Jayhawks.

Nick Czyz picked up the win for KU by pitching 5.1 solid innings and only allowing three hits. Jon Klausing (4-2) gets credit for the loss for NU.
