Iowa State claimed second place at the NCAA Championship March 17 at The Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich. The Cyclones earned 88.5 points followed by Missouri (third), Oklahoma State (fifth), Nebraska (16th) and Oklahoma (22nd) place.
Seven individuals wrestled in the NCAA Championship matches representing six different weight classes. Paul Donahoe (Nebraska), Trent Paulson (Iowa State) and Ben Askren (Missouri) walked away with individual titles.
Donahoe, a No. 6 seed upset Big 12 competitor and the Outstanding Wrestler of the Big 12 Championship, Sam Hazewinkel (Oklahoma) in the championship match at 125 (dec. 3-1). Paulson defeated Craig Henning (Wisconsin) in a decision 6-4 for the 157 weight class while three-time NCAA champion, Askren defeated Keith Gavin (Pittsburgh) in an 8-2 decision.
Their individual titles boosted the all-time NCAA individual league total to 275.
