COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Nebraska won the 2007 Big 12 Gymnastics
Championship on Saturday at the Hearnes Center on the University of
Missouri campus. The Huskers have claimed a conference-leading eight
crowns (1997-99, 2001-03, `05, `07) in the Big 12's 11-year history.
The Huskers compiled a score of 196.475 followed by runner-up
Oklahoma (195.325). Team host Missouri (194.450) and defending champion
Iowa State (193.975) finished in third and fourth place, respectively.
Individual champions included Emily Parsons (Nebraska) in the
all-around, vault, and balance beam. The St. Charles, Mo. native also
tied with Brittney Koncak-Schumann (Oklahoma) for top honors in the
floor exercise. While Janet Anson (Iowa State) and Parsons' teammate
Michele Zabawa shared the uneven parallel bars title. Zabawa recorded
her second victory in that event, she also won in 2005. It marked
Parsons' third consecutive win on the balance beam and her second
straight vault triumph.
The top four finishers in each event including all-around
earned All-Big 12 honors. The conference also announced its Gymnast,
Newcomer and Coach of the Year in a vote by Big 12 coaches.
Anson (Iowa State) and Parsons were named Co-Big 12 Gymnasts of
the Year while Megan Barnes (Iowa State) was honored as Big 12 Newcomer
of the Year and Dan Kendig (Nebraska) as Big 12 Coach of the Year.
In 2006, Anson was also selected Gymnast of the Year. The
Kansas City, Mo. senior and Parsons have recorded the Big 12's top
all-around score this season with a 39.650. Entering the championship,
Anson was ranked fifth in the nation in the all-around with a 39.440
regional qualifying average.
Parsons has captured 32 event titles and six in the all-around
during her junior campaign, including tonight's championship. She was
ranked first nationally on floor exercise with a regional qualifying
average of 9.930 as well as second on vault (9.945) and tied for third
on balance beam (9.910) at the conclusion of the regular season.
Barnes competed in the all-around eight times during her
freshman campaign with a season-high score of 39.125 at Iowa. The Salt
Lake City, Utah, native is ranked tied for 21st nationally on vault
while picking up four vault titles.
Kendig has been recognized by his peers for the fifth time as
Big 12 Coach of the Year. He led the Huskers to a 16-4 dual record in
2007 and a Top 10 national ranking. Nebraska's regional qualifying
average is a 196.535 through regular season meets.
All four Big 12 teams entered the meet nationally ranked in the
Top 20. Nebraska is rated seventh while Oklahoma is 10th, Iowa State,
15th and Missouri, 18th.
