The Big 12 Conference has announced its 13th annual All-Big 12 Soccer Teams, voted on by the league’s head coaches.
Yolanda Odenyo (Oklahoma State) was honored as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, while Kasey Moore (Texas) and Michelle Wenino (Colorado) were named Defensive Co-Players of the Year. Emily Cressy (Kansas) was chosen as Rookie of the Year and Colin Carmichael (Oklahoma State) took Coach of the Year honors.
Odenyo, a senior from Uppsala, Sweden, currently tops the conference in points (34), goals (15), goals per game (0.79) and points per game (1.79). Also the 2006 Big 12 Co-Player of the Year, Odenyo was named to the All-Big 12 team for the fourth time in her career. She has lifted the Cowgirls to a Big 12 regular-season championship and a No. 8 national ranking.
Senior defender Moore was named Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season and was selected to the All-Big 12 First Team for the fourth time. The 2005 Big 12 Rookie of the Year, she has had an impact on both ends of the field in her final campaign. The Mission Viejo, Calif., native has aided the Texas backline in nine shutouts while totaling 16 points on six goals and four assists.
Wenino, a senior from Aurora, Colo., was named to the All-Big 12 First Team for the second consecutive year. She helped the Colorado defense to a 0.71 goals-against average for second in the conference. Wenino and the Buffs also totaled eight shutouts on the year.
Freshman forward Cressy is tied for fifth in the conference with three game-winning goals. The Ventura, Calif., native has also totaled seven goals on the year for 10th in the Big 12 statistics. Cressy was honored as Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Aug. 26 and Sept. 23. She is the first KU player in school history to earn one of the conference’s player-of-the-year accolades.
Carmichael guided his Cowgirl squad to its first regular-season conference crown in program history and claimed a No. 1 seed for the Big 12 Soccer Championship. OSU compiled a 16-1-2 overall record and a 7-1-2 mark in conference play in 2008. In addition, the Cowgirls are tied for No. 1 in the nation with Notre Dame in scoring offense with 3.63 goals per game and boast a winning percentage of .895. Carmichael was previously honored as Big 12 Co-Coach of the Year in 2006.
The Big 12 Soccer Championship opens quarterfinal action on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. Semifinal and championship matches continue on Friday, Nov. 7, and Sunday, Nov. 9, with a free live video streaming of the quarterfinals and semifinals available on Big12sports.com. FSN is slated to broadcast the final game live at Noon (CT) on Sunday.
