Kansas State standout Michael Beasley, a consensus All-America First Team member last year, was selected second overall and led a record 10 picks from the Big 12 in the 2008 NBA Draft. The overall total of 10 choices from league schools shattered the old record of six, set on three different occasions (1997, '98, 2004).
Beasley's selection tied the Big 12 record for highest draft pick in history. Last year, Seattle drafted Kevin Durant of Texas at No. 2 en route to NBA Rookie of the Year honors. In 2006, former Longhorn LaMarcus Aldridge was at No. 2 by Chicago and later traded to Portland. Beasley is the first K-State player drafted since Steve Henson went to the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the 1990 draft.
Texas' D.J. Augustin was the next first-round pick from the Big 12 after being chosen at No. 9 by the Charlotte Bobcats. A consensus All-America honoree, the guard's choice makes UT the only school in the nation to have a top 10 pick in each of the last three NBA drafts. In fact, the Longhorns are just the fourth school since 1985 (when the draft lottery was implemented) to produce a lottery pick in three consecutive years. Connecticut (2004-06), Duke (1992-95) and Georgia Tech (1989-91) have previously accomplished the feat.
Two Kansas players rounded out the Big 12's first-round choices. Guard Brandon Rush was picked 13th by the Portland Trail Blazers before being traded to Indiana. Forward Darrell Arthur was then selected at No. 27 by the New Orleans Hornets. His rights ended up with the Memphis Grizzlies after trades to Houston and Portland. The NCAA Champions also had three players - Mario Chalmers, Darnell Jackson and Sasha Kaun - in the second round. The five players chosen ties the two-round NBA Draft record (Connecticut, 2006; Florida, 2007).
In addition to the three Jayhawks, DeAndre Jordan (Texas A&M), Bill Walker (Kansas State) and Mike Taylor (Iowa State) all heard their names called in the second round. It marks the first time A&M has had players taken in the first two rounds in back-to-back years. For KSU, it is the first time since 1982 that multiple players were chosen in the same draft. Taylor is the 33rd former Cyclone to be selected and first since 2006.
The overall total of 10 players chosen this year marks the fourth straight season and eighth time in the 12-year history of the Big 12 that at least four league athletes were drafted. The six second-round choices were a record. The 10 picks were the second-most of any conference in the country (Pac-10, 12).
This year's draft is also the 11th time in 12 years the Big 12 has had at least one first-round choice. A total of 57 players from the Big 12 have been selected since the first season in 1996-97. Kansas has had 16 players chosen in the past 12 years - the most among any team in the conference. Texas is next with 10 athletes being selected.
