It was an Aggie double in Fayetteville, Ark. as the Texas A&M men and women took home both team titles at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at John McDonnell Field. Ten individual event crowns were also won by Big 12 student-athletes.
With the victories, Texas A&M head coach Pat Henry becomes the only coach in NCAA history to win both men’s and women’s outdoor titles in the same year at two schools. The veteran coach previously accomplished a double title performance at LSU in 1989 and 1990. The Aggies’ team wins are also the first for both the men and women in TAMU outdoor history.
A&M sealed the men’s title with a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay to close the day, posting a time of 3:00.91. The Aggie men totaled 48 points to narrowly edge perennial powers Oregon, Florida State and Florida, who finished in a three-way tie for second with 46.
The Aggie women notched 50 points over the course of the meet to finish ahead of Oregon (43) and Arizona State (41). A&M’s Porscha Lucas won her first championship in the 200, finishing first in 22.81 seconds, while also helping the Aggies’ 4x100 relay team to a win. Lucas, along with Khrystal Carter, Dominique Duncan and Gabby Mayo, posted a time of 42.36 in the 4x100, nearly a second faster than Florida State.
Individually, Oklahoma freshman Will Claye took first in the men’s triple jump with a mark of 17.24m, while Scott Sellers (Kansas State) closed his career with a win in the high jump (7-05.00/2.26m). In addition, Oklahoma State freshman German Fernandez claimed the men’s 1,500 title in a time of 3:39.00
For the women, Destinee Hooker of Texas won her third national high jump crown at 6-04.75/1.95m, and Longhorn teammate Alexandria Anderson grabbed the 100-meter dash title in 11.20 seconds. UT’s 4x400 relay squad (Judy Nwosu, Angele Cooper, Anderson and Chantel Malone) also grabbed the final event of the meet with a time of 3:28.51.
Jenny Barringer (Colorado) won her third career 3,000-meter steeplechase in an NCAA-record time of 9:25.54. The senior and 2008 Olympian previously won the event in 2006 and 2008. Texas Tech’s D’Andra Carter added a top finish in the women’s discus, throwing a 182-01.00 for the Red Raiders’ first national championship in the event.
