OKLAHOMA CITY - The No. 8-seed Baylor advanced in the first round after defeating No. 9-seed Iowa State, 15-4. With 15 runs, Baylor set the Big 12 Championship record in runs scored in a single game. The combined total of 19 runs scored by BU and ISU also tied the Championship single-game record set by OU (13) and TAMU(6) in 2006. Baylor will next see top-seeded Texas in the second round.
ISU came out swinging as senior Kelsy Kidwell began the game with a triple, followed by freshman Erica Miller knocking her seventh homerun over the left-field wall to give the Cyclones the early 2-0 advantage. In their first at-bat, Baylor had bases loaded and managed to score a run on an ISU error.
Baylor began to warm things up in the bottom of the second by scoring nine runs off of seven hits. During the inning, senior Courtney Nieten garnered two RBIs to set a new career high with 35. The Bears kept plugging away as they tabbed two more runs in the third inning to go up 12-2.
With bases loaded, ISU added two runs in the fourth off a single by Carleigh Berry. The Bears bested that in their next at-bat as sophomore Megan Turk drove in two more RBIs and KJ Freeland scored on a wild pitch to put the score at 15-4. With two on, ISU was unable to rally as BU held them scoreless in top of the fifth to end the game on a run rule.
Baylor had 11 team RBIs against Iowa State, tying the single-game record set by Oklahoma on two occasions (2000 and 2003).
