OKLAHOMA CITY – In game seven of the 2010 Big 12 Softball Championship, the No. 2-seed Oklahoma Sooners advanced to the finals after defeating No. 3-seed Texas A&M, 5-1. This will be the seventh appearance in the championship game for the Sooners as they improve their conference-leading record to 38-18 all-time at the event.
TAMU was the first to strike as heavy hitter Meagan May drove one over the right field fence in the fourth inning to give the Aggies the 1-0 jump. That marked the 22nd homerun for the TAMU freshman on the year, positioning May tied for first in the Big 12 record books for homeruns in a single season.
OU quickly answered scoring four in the bottom of the inning. All-American Brianna Flores led off hitting a double followed by Jessica Shults getting a walk, then junior Haley Nix singled to score Flores and put the Sooners on the board, 1-0. Next at the plate, OU’s Keilani Ricketts went yard sending a 2-1 pitch beyond the center field fence to give her team its first lead of the game, 4-1.
Oklahoma began the fifth inning where they left off, scoring one run off of three singles from Krystle Huey, Flores and Shults to advanced OU’s lead to 5-1. A&M was unable to answer in its next two at-bats as OU’s Ricketts fanned five batters and delivered her second 12-strikeout performance of the day.
