OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Texas made a last-chance run in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit as No. 5-seed Missouri knocked off the No. 1-seed, 11-6, Saturday night in the final game of the first day of the Big 12 Softball Championship.
UT jumped on the board first with a line drive to right field from Tallie Thrasher that scored Amy Hooks? to put the Longhorns up 1-0 in the bottom of the first. MU fired back in the top of the second, going up 4-2 on a three-run dinger by JJ Marston. Ashlie Ortega started the rally with a walk, Marla Schweisberger singled and Rhea Taylor knocked in an RBI to set up the home run lead.
The Tigers continued the hits in the fourth as Taylor singled again and stole her 41st base of the season, Catherine Lee walked and Marston notched another RBI to extend the lead to four runs. Taylor’s stolen base was her third of the game, a Big 12 Championship single-game record. It was more of the same in the fifth as Abby Vock singled to left field and scored on a Taylor triple. Taylor came home a throwing error to put MU up 7-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, UT rallied when Lexy Bennett walked and both Hooks and Nadia Taylor singled. Thrasher walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Loryn Johnson’s two-RBI double to make it 7-5 through five innings. MU bounced back in the sixth, taking the lead back up to four runs, 11-5. The two teams tallied a combined 16 RBI to tie the Big 12 Championship record.
Attendance for the day’s games was 2,683. Missouri advances to play the Oklahoma Sooners in the championship game on Sunday, which will air live on Fox Sports Network at noon.
