Acho, Carter Chosen To Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

Sam Acho (Texas) and Quinton Carter (Oklahoma) have been chosen to the 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, one of the most prestigious off-the-field honors in college football. The Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) have announced Acho and Carter as two of the 11 student-athletes named to the I-A team.

Acho, an active member in Texas' community service program, volunteers time at local homeless shelters. He is also part of a group of Longhorns that regularly visit patients at the Dell Children's Medical Center. Each summer, Acho joins his brother and father on a medical mission trip to Nigeria. A member of UT's Student Advisory Council, he served as one of Texas' representatives at the Big 12's conference on black student government and was UT's representative at the 2009 NCAA leadership conference. Acho, who is nearly fluent in Spanish, has spent time at the Jubilee Community Center helping teach adults English as a second language.

Carter is the fourth Sooner in the past five years to be named to the Allstate AFCA Good works Team. He has volunteered his time with Norman KinderCare, where he teaches children basic reading and writing skills. He has also participated in a variety of activities, such as nature walks and recycling programs. In addition to his work at KinderCare, he has served with the SOUL Organization, the Oklahoma City Marathon, the University Center for Student Advancement and the OU Black Graduate Student Association.

A total of 112 players across collegiate football were nominated for the award by sports information directors on behalf of their teams, the most ever in the 19-year history of the program. From the nominations, a committee names 22 college football players from across the country to the 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. Of the two 11-member teams, one includes players competing in the NCAA® Football Bowl Subdivision (I-A) and the other is a combined team representing the NCAA® Football Championship Subdivision (I-AA), Divisions II, III, and the NAIA.

The following players have also been selected to the Division I-A 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team: Riley Nelson from BYU, Christian Ponder from Florida State, Bryan Morang from Duke, Ben Chappell from Indiana, Kirk Cousins from Michigan State, Adam Kiel from Northern Illinois, Corbin Bryant from Northwestern, Stefan Wisniewski from Penn State and Amara Kamara from Temple.
