Trio From Big 12 Selected In WPS Draft

Lauren Alkek (Oklahoma), Whitney Palmer (Oklahoma) and Alyssa Mautz (Texas A&M) represented the Big 12 as selections in the third annual Women's Professional Soccer Draft in Baltimore, Md.

Alkek, selected by Sky Blue FC with the 21st pick overall and second selection in the fourth round, was a four-year starter for the Sooners on defense. The Victoria, Texas, product was part of 19 Sooner shutouts over her career and helped lead OU to its first Big 12 Championship game in 2010.

Palmer, chosen in the second round by the Boston Breakers, became the first Sooner to be named an All-Region selection in two separate seasons. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America named Palmer a second team member in 2009 and 2010. The Plano, Texas, native finished her career at OU as the program's all-time leading scorer with 38 goals and 83 points and earned All-Big 12 first team honors as a junior in 2009.

Mautz was named an All-Big 12 first team member in 2010 and picked up second team honors in 2009. She led A&M's offense with 29 points on 12 goals and five assists in 2010 and also trained with the U.S. U-20 and U-23 teams each summer during college. With the 16th overall pick, she will join Alkek on Sky Blue FC in New Jersey.

The six teams in the WPS combined to select 24 of the nation's best collegiate players. Oklahoma was among six schools with multiple picks.
