OverviewYear One of the Tommy Tuberville Era was a rollercoaster. The Red Raiders won two, lost two, won, lost, won, lost, won, lost before winning their last three games. The defense, particularly against the pass, was porous and the offense was at times ineffective. All of those tribulations, though, produced a winning season.
There will be more changes in 2011. Veteran quarterback Taylor Potts is gone along with running back Baron Batch plus receivers Detron Lewis and Lyle Leong. Tuberville hired Chad Glasgow as his new defensive coordinator. Glasgow comes to Texas Tech from TCU where he was safeties coach. He has installed a 4-2-5 scheme that should shore up the pass defense.
Who's missingIn addition to the veterans gone from the offensive side, the defense has to replace seven starters. Defensive tackle Colby Whitlock was a three-year starter while linebackers Bront Bird and Brian Duncan were also experienced players. Matt Williams, who famously took over kicking duties as a sophomore after coming out of the stands during an on-field kicking promotion, must be replaced.
Who's backQuarterback Seth Doege emerged from spring practice with the starting job. Because of two knee injuries, over the last six years going back to his junior year in high school he's made one start and played in two other games. Tramain Swindall, Alex Torres and Austin Zouzalik are the most experienced receivers on the roster. Cody Davis, Brett Dewhurst and D.J. Johnson are three starters returning in the secondary.
Spring news* Seth Doege has thrown just 65 passes in his college career but Tuberville is confident he can be a productive quarterback. The junior is also more mobile than recent Texas Tech quarterbacks. In the spring game, Doege passed for 317 yards (20-of-35), four touchdowns with just one interception.
* The 4-2-5 alignment installed by new defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow basically uses a third safety who is part defensive back, part linebacker. "I think it fits us very well because we have so much experience at safety and lack of depth elsewhere," junior safety Cody Davis said. Davis is one of three returning starters in the secondary. Terrance Bullitt is expected to be the third safety after playing well during the spring.
* Junior Tramain Swindall has spent most of his career at inside receiver but he moved to the outstide during the spring. At 6-3, he'll be able to use his size and speed against cornerbacks instead of battling linebackers and nickel backs. "He wants to play out there, and he gives us some length," offensive coordinator Neal Brown said. "I think he'll help us more outside than he will inside."
Coach Tommy Tuberville says"I've done this three times. Ole Miss, Auburn and here, where you go in and start from scratch. You bring in all your guys and get going and change everything to your philosophy. It's hard. It's time-consuming. I had to stay on the road the first five or six months and try to coach a team. The great thing about the season starting last year was I knew at least I was going to be home most of the time. But it's a big sales job. You've got to go out and sell your product, what you're doing."
