Highlighted by the only double round-robin format in the nation among the six major conferences, the Big 12 has announced its men's basketball league schedule for the 2011-12 season. Each squad will face an 18-game conference slate for the first time in Big 12 history.
Currently, a total of 80 conference games will be televised nationally or regionally on an ESPN network, CBS or the regionally-syndicated Big 12 Network. The games are being carried as part of the fourth season of a multi-year agreement with ESPN that runs through the 2015-16 season. Among the league contests not televised on a national or regional basis, many of those will be selected at a later date for local telecast packages and inclusion on ESPN Full Court and ESPN3.com.
This year's Big 12 slate matches the earliest start in league history (1998-99) when Texas A&M travels to Baylor on Monday, January 2. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU - one of five Monday contests scheduled for the network in a new exposure for the Conference. The Big 12 will also continue its spot in ESPN's traditional “Big Monday” lineup on January 16 with two games that include four league squads. During the 2011-12 campaign, every school in the conference will be showcased numerous times on ESPN or ESPN2.
In men's basketball, the Big 12 was the first conference to be guaranteed three weekly telecast windows on ESPN or ESPN2, which each reach approximately 100 million homes, respectively. In addition, 95 games overall (conference and non-conference) will air annually with more than 60 seen on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3.com or another national over-the-air network.
In March, the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship will continue to be televised on a variety of ESPN platforms including ESPN, ESPN2 and in regional syndication on the Big 12 Network. The Championship will boast a new format, with two first-round games on Wednesday evening, March 7, followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and title contest in successive days.
The Big 12 Network is in its fourth year, with games seen throughout the conference's geographic footprint and produced by ESPN Regional Television. It has also been distributed in numerous other markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Baltimore and Providence. Among all the televised games, most will be shown as part of ESPN Full Court and available on ESPN3.com.
The Big 12 has had at least eight postseason teams in each of the last four campaigns with a minimum of seven squads with 20 victories or more during that time. The league has sent six different teams to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament the past three campaigns and has had 17 regional finalists since 2002, both totals the most of any conference.
The Big 12 also had the nation's best non-conference winning percentage a year ago and has won 61.7 percent of its NCAA matchups since 2008, the second-best mark of any major conference.
