Caitlin Mooney (Oklahoma), Krista Lopez (Oklahoma State), Alexa Gaul
(Texas) and Ingrid Vidal (Kansas) have been honored as Big 12 Soccer
Players of the Week for games played from Aug. 29-Sept. 4. Mooney and
Lopez share the Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Gaul is the
league’s top defender for the week and Vidal takes the Newcomer award.
This
marks the second career honor for both Mooney and Lopez. Mooney was
previously named Newcomer of the Week on Oct. 12, 2010, while Lopez was
honored as the Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 7, 2010. Gaul has
been the week’s top defender four previous times with the last coming on
Oct. 19, 2010. Vidal collects her second straight Newcomer award. It is
the first time that the same player has won the Newcomer honor in
back-to-back weeks since Texas Tech’s Jessica Fuston did so in October
of 2010. Kansas becomes the first school since Texas Tech in September
of 2010 to win the Newcomer award in three straight weeks.
Offensive Players of the Week
Caitlin Mooney, Oklahoma, F, Jr., Edmond, Okla.
With
seven points in two games, Mooney played an integral part in helping
the Sooners offense come alive over the weekend. Oklahoma was in the
midst of a three game losing streak, before the junior forward racked up
two goals and two assists for six total points in a 4-1 win over Oral
Roberts on Friday. She became one of only three Sooners to post six
points in a single game and the first OU player ever to boast two goals
and two assists in one contest. On Sunday, Mooney’s one assist against
Missouri State helped the Sooners secure a 3-1 victory. With the big
weekend, Mooney is tied for fifth in the Big 12 in assists and sixth in
both points and goals scored.
Krista Lopez, Oklahoma State, F, Sr., Carrollton, Texas
Lopez
became the first Big 12 player since 2009 to record four goals in a
single game as Oklahoma State recorded a 7-0 shutout of Arkansas-Little
Rock on Friday. The offensive outburst also made her the first Cowgirl
in history to score four goals and tally eight points in a single
contest. Lopez is currently the top goal scorer in the Big 12 with five.
Defensive Player of the Week
Alexa Gaul, Texas, GK, Jr., Naperville, Ill.
Gaul
collected her third and fourth shutouts of the season as Texas recorded
a pair of 2-0 wins over UTSA and Dartmouth. It marks just the second
time in school history that a Texas team has notched four shutouts in
its first six games. For the weekend, she had four total saves and
vaulted herself into a tie for the most the shutouts in the league.
Newcomer of the Week
Ingrid Vidal, Kansas, F, Fr., Palmira, Colombia
For
the second straight week, Vidal netted two goals to help the Jayhawks
continue their winning ways. The freshman forward had a hand in each of
KU’s goals in a 3-1 win against Missouri State. She tallied two assists
and then scored a goal of her own in the 83rd minute. On Sunday against
South Dakota State, Vidal scored the Jayhawks’ first goal in a 2-1
come-from-behind win. She is tied for the most points (11) in the
Conference and is also second in goals scored with four.
