West Virginia, the Big 12 regular season and postseason winners each of the last two seasons, is the pick to win the conference again in a vote of the league’s head coaches. The Mountaineers, 21-1-2 in Big 12 competition since 2012, return eight starters and 15 letterwinners from last year’s squad that qualified for the NCAA Championship for the 15th straight season.
Texas Tech welcomes eight starters back from its team that advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship last season. The top scorer in the conference, Janine Beckie, returns for her senior campaign after being named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2014. Oklahoma State is selected third for the second straight year and boasts 95 percent of its goal scoring back from a team that has earned back-to-back NCAA bids.
Kansas was chosen fourth after recording the second-highest overall win total (15) in the league in 2014. Oklahoma, Texas and TCU were next at fifth, sixth and seventh in the preseason tally. The Sooners and Longhorns were two of the six Big 12 squads that earned NCAA bids a year ago, the league’s highest total since 2008. Baylor and Iowa State rounded out the preseason poll.
The All-Big 12 preseason team will be announced on Thursday in anticipation of the start of the Big 12 soccer campaign. Eight of nine schools will begin action on Friday, August 21.
