Big 12 Men?s Basketball Is No. 1 - Twice

For the first time in Big 12 history, the Conference can boast two No. 1 teams, as both Kansas and Oklahoma are ranked No. 1 in the top 25 polls. KU is No. 1 in the latest Associated Press rankings, while OU is first in the USA Today Coaches Poll. With each team ranked one and two in their respective polls, it marks the third time in league history that the Conference has the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in America.

It is the first time any conference has accomplished the No. 1 and No. 2 feat since the Big 12 did it in the coaches poll back in 2010-11 (No. 1 Kansas, No. 2 Texas). The league was also the last to do it in the AP poll, accomplishing it for six straight weeks with the same teams from November 30, 2009 - January 4, 2010.

Kansas is No. 1 for the first time since holding the top spot in both polls on February 14, 2011. Oklahoma is No. 1 for the first time since the final regular season Associated Press poll of the 1990 campaign (March 6, 1990).

The Big 12 is well-represented in the rankings beyond OU and KU. Iowa State checks in at No. 14 in the coaches poll, while West Virginia is ranked No. 15 and Baylor is No. 25. Texas Tech is among the teams receiving votes. ISU is 13th in the AP tally, followed by No. 17 WVU. The Bears and Red Raiders are among a group receiving votes to give the Big 12 six of its 10 teams ranked or receiving votes this week.  Nine of the 10 conference squads have been ranked or received votes this season alone.

With Kansas and Oklahoma facing off on Monday in Lawrence, it will mark the first time in Big 12 history that conference squads ranked No. 1 and No. 2 will play each other. There have been nine 1 vs. 2 matchups in the same league in college basketball history, with the last taking place on February 25, 2007 (No. 2 Ohio State 49, No. 1 Wisconsin 48). Two of the nine were in the Big Eight Conference less than one month apart - March 10, 1990 in the Big Eight Tournament semifinals (No. 1 Oklahoma 95, No. 2 Kansas 77) and February 13, 1990 (No. 2 Missouri 77, No. 1 Kansas 71).

The Big 12 has had at least five teams in the top 25 for 27 consecutive weeks. Nine of the 10 squads in the Big 12 have been ranked in the top 25 at some point since January 1, 2014, including eight last season alone.

The Big 12 boasts the nation’s best non-conference winning percentage (.831) and has just 20 non-league losses, the fewest of any conference. The current Big 12 non-conference win percentage is the highest by any league since 1992-93 and is also tied for the ninth-best in NCAA history.

The Big 12 is No. 1 in the latest RPI with three teams in the top 10, six in the top 27 and eight in the top 102. The Big 12 has been the No. 1 conference in RPI three of the last six years, including each of the previous two.
