Headlined by top seed Texas Tech on the men’s side and No. 1 seed Oklahoma State on the women’s side, conference squads will battle on the court for the Big 12 Championship crown. The 2016 Big 12 Tennis Championship is set for April 28 – May 1 at the Greenwood Tennis Center on the campus of Oklahoma State.
In the men’s bracket, TCU sits as the two seed, while Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Baylor check in as the third, fourth and fifth seeds, respectively. Texas rounds out the men’s competition at the No. 6 seed. In the women’s bracket, TCU will compete as the two seed and Texas Tech is the No. 3 seed. Kansas, Baylor, Texas and Oklahoma slot in as the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh seeds. Iowa State, K-State and West Virginia round out the field as the No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 seeds.
Men’s competition begins on Friday, April 29 with quarterfinal matches between No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 5 Baylor, along with No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 6 Texas. The top two seeds earned a bye and start play in the semifinals on Saturday. The men’s championship match will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 1.
Women’s competition kicks off on Thursday, April 28 with No. 8 Iowa State vs. No. 9 Kansas State and No. 7 Oklahoma vs. No. 10 West Virginia at 10 a.m. The quarterfinals take place on Friday and the semifinals on Saturday. Seeds one through six have a first round bye and begin competition on Friday. The women’s championship will be broadcast on FS2 at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 1.
The Big 12 boasts unprecedented success in tennis as all men’s teams and six women’s squads are currently nationally ranked. Five of the top six men’s squads are in the top 20, as every team in the league has been ranked every week this season. Among the women’s teams, five sit in the top 35, with three in the top 25.
Last season Oklahoma secured the men’s title, while Baylor took home the women’s crown. Axel Alvarez Llama (Oklahoma) and Kelley Anderson (Baylor) both earned Most Outstanding Player honors.
