Big 12 Players Collect Multiple Honors on Thursday

Big 12 players took home multiple awards and All-America honors on Thursday evening at the Home Depot College Football Awards show held at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta Georgia.

Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield received four awards on Thursday. Mayfield became the ninth Big 12 player to snag the Davey O’Brien Award, which is presented to the nation’s top quarterback. He is the sixth Big 12 player to win the Walter Camp Award and the first since Texas’ Colt McCoy took home the hardware in 2009. The senior capped the night with the Maxwell Award, which is awarded to the college football player of the year. He is the fifth Big 12 player to win the Maxwell Award. Earlier in the day, the Associated Press named Mayfield the 2017 AP College Football Player of the Year.

Mayfield's teammate Mark Andrews was honored as the nation's top tight end with the John Mackey Award earlier this week.

Oklahoma State’s James Washington was tabbed the Fred Biletnikoff Award winner, which marked a nation-leading third time a Cowboy wideout had received the award. Washington is the seventh overall Big 12 player to win the award and the third consecutive.

Texas’ Michael Dickson was presented the Ray Guy Award for the nation’s best punter. Dickson is the first Big 12 player since 2008 and the fifth overall to claim the award.

Nine Big 12 players were named to the 128th edition of the Walter Camp All-America team. Seven from the Big 12 were on the first team, which marked the most of any conference. First team honorees included: TE Mark Andrews (Oklahoma), OL Orlando Brown (Oklahoma), QB Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma), LB Obgonnia Okoronwko (Oklahoma), WR James Washington (Oklahoma State), P Michael Dickson (Texas) and DB DeShon Elliott (Texas). Second team honorees included West Virginia wide receiver David Sills V and K-State kick returner D.J. Reed.
