Haliburton and Holyfield Earn Season’s First Weekly Awards

Tyrese Haliburton (Iowa State) and TJ Holyfield (Texas Tech) picked up the season’s first Big 12 men’s basketball weekly awards. Haliburton earned his first player of the week honor after two selections last year for newcomer of the week.  
 
Haliburton opened the season with two double-doubles, averaging 13.5 points and 13.0 assists. The sophomore guard also contributed 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals while shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 40 percent behind the arc. Against Mississippi Valley State, Haliburton had 12 points, 14 assists, seven rebounds and six steals. He followed with 15 points, 12 assists, seven rebounds and two steals at Oregon State. Haliburton’s 12 assists without a turnover at Oregon State tied a school record.
 
Holyfield started his Texas Tech career by averaging 17.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in a pair of home wins. The senior forward led the Red Raiders with 20 points and had six rebounds in a win over Bethune-Cookman after providing 15 points and six rebounds in the season-opening victory over Eastern Illinois. The graduate transfer was 15-for-19 from the field and blocked two shots last week.
