ISU, OU, OSU and WVU Earn Week 12 Awards
Student-athletes from Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and West Virginia were honored for their Week 12 performances on the gridiron.
Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts earned his third Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week award, while Oklahoma State linebacker Kolby Harvell-Peel collected his third Defensive Player of the Week honor this season. Iowa State’s Connor Assalley was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week, while West Virginia’s Jarret Doege was named Newcomer of the Week. Assalley and Deoge are first-time award winners. A five-person media panel selects the honorees.
Hurts accounted for 411 yards of offense (305 after halftime) to rally Oklahoma from 25 down in a 34-31 road win over previously undefeated Baylor. The senior quarterback was 30-for-42 through the air (both season highs) for 297 yards and a season-high four touchdowns. He also ran 27 times for a game-high 114 yards in the largest comeback victory in OU history.
Harvell-Peel, a sophomore, collected a pair of interceptions and recorded three tackles in the Cowboys’ win over Kansas. The safety was responsible for five turnovers in the last two games and has been credited with seven during the season.
Assalley made both of his field goals in Iowa State's 23-21 win over No. 22 Texas. He drilled his second field goal from 36 yards, as the final seconds ticked away in the game, giving the Cyclones their first regulation walk-off win since 1983. His first make was a 35-yarder in the second quarter.
In his second game at West Virginia and first start, Doege completed 20-of-30 for 234 yards and three touchdowns in the Mountaineers’ victory at No. 24 K-State. His three touchdown passes (19, 15, 50) tied for a WVU season high, as he completed 67 percent of his passes for the game.
