Jared Butler (Baylor) picked up his first Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week while Jahmi’us Ramsey (Texas Tech) earned his first Newcomer of the Week accolade. The weekly honor is the second in Butler’s career as he received a newcomer recognition last season.
Butler was named the Myrtle Beach Invitational Most Valuable Player after leading the Bears to three wins and the tournament title. He averaged 17.7 points, 3.7 assists and 2.7 steals while knocking down all 10 of his free throw attempts. The sophomore guard tallied 22 points against No. 17 Villanova in the championship game that featured 18 lead changes. He checked in with 6:14 remaining and hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Baylor the lead for good.
Ramsey averaged 20 points and 6.5 rebounds in Texas Tech’s two wins last week. He poured in a season-high 27 points with five 3-pointers and six rebounds versus LIU after scoring 13 in a victory over Tennessee State. Against LIU, Ramsey was 10-for-16 from the field and 5-for-6 on 3-pointers to eclipse his previous freshman-best 25 points.
