Joens and Lee Earn Week 6 Awards
Iowa State’s Ashley Joens took home Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, while K-State’s Ayoka Lee earned freshman honors for a fourth-consecutive week. A five-person media panel selects the weekly award winners.
Joens scored 67 points and hauled in 25 rebounds in two games on the week against Iowa and Wright State. The sophomore averaged 33.5 points and 12.5 rebounds. Against in-state rival Iowa, she netted 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Joens followed up that performance with 41 points against WSU, the second-most in program history, while shooting 52.2% from the floor (12-of-23) and adding 13 rebounds. It was just the seventh time since 1999-00 that a Big 12 player achieved 40+ points and 13+ rebounds.
Lee tallied a career-high and tied the K-State season-high with 24 points and tied her career-high on the boards with 14 while blocking two shots in a win over Kansas City. Lee set a career-high from the foul line, as she was 12-of-13 (92.3%). This was Lee's fifth double-double this season and her third in the last four games. Lee joins Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris (4 in 2006) and Texas’ Joyner Holmes (5 in 2017) as the only Big 12 rookies to win Freshman of the Week in four or more consecutive weeks.
