First Time Honorees Receive Men’s Basketball Awards

Freddie Gillespie (Baylor) and Rasir Bolton (Iowa State) picked up their first men’s basketball honors after helping their teams to wins over ranked opponents. Gillespie was named Big 12 Player of the Week while Bolton captured Newcomer of the Week.

Gillespie led the Bears to a win over No. 12 Arizona with his fourth double-double of the season. He keyed the interior of BU’s defense which held Arizona to its lowest field goal percentage (.269) since at least 2000. The senior had 17 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots in the game. Gillespie also blocked five shots and recorded 13 rebounds vs. UMES in a midweek win.

Bolton averaged 18 points as Iowa State went 2-0, including a win over No. 16 Seton Hall. The sophomore guard registered 17 points and a career-high eight rebounds against Seton Hall and tallied 19 points earlier in the week against Kansas City. It was nearly impossible for opponents to keep Bolton off the line last week as he finished 18-for-21 at the charity stripe.
