Five Garner Week 5 Honors
Five Big 12 student-athletes were recognized for their efforts during Week 5.
Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard as tabbed Offensive Player of the Week, while Baylor’s Clay Johnston earned the distinction for Defensive Player of the Week. Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts was named Newcomer of the Week. Baylor kicker John Mayers and TCU returner Jalen Reagor shared Special Teams Player of the Week honors. The award winners are selected by a five-person media panel.
Hubbard ran for 296 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys’ win over K-State. The sophomore’s longest run of the day was a career-long 84-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He has registered three 200-yard performances this season.
Johnston led a Baylor defense that held Iowa State scoreless through three quarters. He topped the Bears with 13 tackles, 1.5 tackles-for-loss and a pair of pass breakups in the victory.
Mayers nailed a 38-yard game-winning field goal with 21 seconds remaining to lead Baylor to a 23-21 win over Iowa State. Additionally, the freshman went 2-for-2 in extra point attempts.
Reagor returned four punts for 139 yards and a touchdown in TCU's win over Kansas. His 73-yard punt return for a touchdown was the first of his career. He totaled 148 all-purpose yards in the contest.
In less than three quarters of work, Hurts completed 17-of-24 passes for a career-high 415 yards and three touchdowns and rushed nine times for 70 yards and a score as the Sooners knocked off Texas Tech. He became just the third QB in Big 12 history to throw for 415-plus yards, register three passing touchdowns, rush for at least 70 yards and score a rushing TD in a conference game.
Hubbard earned his second Offensive Player of the Week award this season, while Hurts also earned Newcomer of the Week for a second time. Johnston, Mayers and Reagor are first-time honorees.
