Statement on Last Play of TCU vs. Texas Football Game

Big 12 Conference football officials liaison Greg Burks today announced the enforcement of the offensive holding penalty called against TCU on the last play of the game in Saturday’s win over Texas should have resulted in the replay of the fourth down play as an untimed down.  Facing a fourth-down from its own 15-yardline with :06 left in the game and leading 33-29, a holding penalty was called on TCU while quarterback Max Duggan, after taking the snap, ran through the back of the TCU endzone for a safety as time expired.

“After further review and in consultation with NCAA national coordinator of football officials Steve Shaw it was confirmed that the holding penalty should have resulted in the ball being moved back half-the-distance to the TCU goal, and the replay of fourth down as an untimed down to end the game,” said Burks.  “We are in the process of addressing the ambiguity in the current rule raised by this play.”
