TCU headlined the 2020 Big 12 soccer awards with four honorees. Grace Collins collected Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, while Emily Alvarado was named Goalkeeper of the Year. Defender Marz Akins won Freshman of the Year, while Eric Bell was tabbed Coach of the Year. West Virginia’s Jordan Brewster was named the Defensive Player of the Year. All honorees are selected by a vote of the league’s coaches. Coaches are not permitted to vote for themselves or their own student-athletes.
Collins is the first Horned Frog to collect Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. The sophomore ranked in the top-25 in seven statistical categories. She was second in the league in goals (5), game-winning goals (3), points (12) and points per game (1.33).
Brewster becomes the eighth Mountaineer since 2012 to claim Defensive Player of the Year. The junior anchored a Mountaineer backline that held the nation’s 16th-best goals against average of .868. She finished the fall with a goal and two assists for four points and was one of 35 players nationally to convert on a penalty kick.
Alvarado earned the league’s first Goalkeeper of the Year award after finishing the year with an 8-0-1 mark. Her .925 save percentage leads the nation amongst goalkeepers with at least two games played, while her .324 goals against ranks second and her seven shutouts are tied for third. She is the TCU record holder with 20 career shutouts.
Akins is the second TCU student-athlete to earn Freshman of the Year. The San Diego native started in eight matches during TCU’s title run and was part of a Horned Frog defense that gave up just three goals and resulted in six shutouts.
Bell led the Horned Frogs to their first Big 12 regular-season championship with an 8-0-1 record. TCU was the first team since 2016 to complete the regular-season slate unblemished. This is Bell’s first Coach of the Year honor.
TCU joins the 2013 West Virginia squad in earning four Big 12 individual awards.
