A pair of student-athletes from Baylor, along with players from Iowa State and Oklahoma State were honored for their accomplishments in Week 12.
Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer was tabbed the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, while Iowa State defensive lineman Latrell Bankston earned the Defensive Player of the Week nod. BU’s John Mayers collected Special Teams Player of the Week, as Oklahoma State’s Dezmon Jackson was named Newcomer of the Week.
Brewer led Baylor to a 32-31 come-from-behind victory over K-State, as he threw for a season-best 349 yards on 31-of-39 passing for a career-high completion percentage of 79.5%. He had two passing touchdowns and a career-high 23 carries for 56 yards and two rushing TDs. Brewer went a perfect 4-of-4 for 45 yards on the final drive to lead BU to the game-winning field goal as time expired. He has led the Bears on six game-winning drives in his career and the first of 2020.
Bankston registered a career-high five tackles and 2.0 sacks in the Cyclones’ 23-20 victory at No. 20 Texas. His first sack of the day was in the first half and stopped a UT scoring drive. Clinging to a three-point lead, UT had one final drive to win or keep the game going. The Longhorns had 3rd-and-10 at the ISU 36 with :09 seconds left, but Bankston busted up the middle to sack Sam Ehlinger for a four-yard loss. It forced UT to use its final timeout and pushed back the game-tying FG attempt to 58 yards.
Mayers knocked through a game-winning 30-yard field goal as time expired to snap BU's five-game losing streak and give the Bears the 32-31 come-from-behind victory over K-State. The kick was the second game-winner of his career, with his first coming back in 2019. On the night, Mayers went a perfect 2-of-2 on field goal attempts and 2-of-2 on PATs despite the wet conditions in Waco.
Jackson made his first career start at Oklahoma State, stepping in for an injured Chuba Hubbard and LD Brown. He scored the first three touchdowns of his Cowboy career in the first half. He also finished with career highs in carries (36), rushing yards (235) rushing touchdowns (3), receptions (2) and receiving yards (10). Jackson’s 235 rushing yards were the fourth-highest total by an OSU running back in the Mike Gundy-era.
The award is the fourth for Mayers in his career and the first this season. Bankston, Brewer and Jackson are first-time honorees.
