Texas’ Matt Coleman III earned Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week while Oklahoma State’s Cade Cunningham picked up Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. It is the first honor for both student-athletes.
In four contests over the last seven days, Coleman averaged a team-best 16.3 ppg and 4.5 apg. He hit 49% from the floor, including 40.9% from 3-point range, and 85.7% of free throws. He led Texas to the Camping World Maui Invitational title with three wins in three days. The senior guard was named tournament MVP, as he averaged 16.0 ppg and 5.0 apg. Coleman hit the game-winning shot with 0.1 second left to beat No. 14/16 North Carolina.
Cunningham led the Cowboys to a road win at Marquette and a home win over Oakland with his all-around game. The freshman guard dropped 15 points, six rebounds and three steals at Marquette, and then posted 18 points and eight assists against Oakland. For the week, Cunningham averaged 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists, and shot 50 percent from the floor and 50 percent from 3-point range.
