Denver’s Alexis Vasquez along with Iowa State’s Andrea Maldonado and Oklahoma’s Ragan Smith and Anastasia Webb have earned Big 12 Gymnastics weekly honors for week eight. All recipients are repeat winners.
Webb’s second Gymnast of the Week honor followed her fifth-consecutive all-around title, where she scored a 39.650, matching her season high for the third time. The junior tied her personal-best on vault with a 9.975, while also scoring a 9.9 on floor and a 9.925 on beam. Webb shared the event title on beam, as she also posted a top-three score in every event. The junior now won 14 event titles this season.
Maldonado earned Event Specialist of the Week for the second time this year after improving her career-best score on vault to a 9.925 and win the event title. She completed a powerful Yurchenko 1.5 and a near-stick to earn the score.
Vasquez was named the Event Specialist of the Week for the fifth time this season and for the second consecutive week after capturing her sixth event title of the year. The sophomore posted a 9.925 on beam, her seventh score above a 9.900, in the anchor position. Her performance guaranteed that Denver would not have to count a fall earlier in the event.
Smith captured her fifth Newcomer of the Week honor after her career night against No. 25 Stanford. The freshman set a personal-best all-around score (39.650) and tied for the all-around title. She has competed in the all-around competition just three times and is one of 12 athletes nationally to reach a mark of 39.650. Smith took home four event titles and posted career-highs on floor (9.975), bars (9.95) and vault (9.800). The freshman has a career high of at least 9.95 on three of four events.
