Day one of the 2020 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship crowned 11 event champions, highlighted by a meet-record 5.77-meter (18’ 11.00”) mark in the men’s pole vault set by Baylor’s KC Lightfoot.
In a close battle with Kansas’ Zach Bradford that saw both vaulters clear the previous meet-best mark of 5.70 meters (18’ 8.25”), Lightfoot was declared the winner on misses.
After the first full day of competition, Iowa State leads on the men’s side with 44 points, while Texas Tech sits in first place for the women after collecting 53 points.
K-State’s Lauren Taubert was the first champion of the day, collecting 4,161 points in the pentathlon and becoming the first Wildcat to win the event since 2014. Texas Tech followed with a pair of winners in the weight throw and pole vault as Seasons Usual recorded a 20.28-meter (66’ 6.50”) throw and Chinne Okoronkwo tallied a 4.35-meter (14’ 3.25”) jump, both career-best marks.
Texas senior O’Brien Wasome collected a first place finish in the long jump, leaping to an 8.00-meter (26’ 3.00”) distance. In the weight throw, Kansas’ Gleb Dudarev defended his 2019 title with a 23.23-meter (76’ 2.75”) throw. His three career titles in that event are tied for the most in Big 12 history.
As running events got underway, Iowa State swept the podium in the 5,000 meters in both the men’s and women’s races with Cailie Logue leading the way and taking the individual title in 16:29.48 and Edwin Kurgat defending his title in 14:01.15. The Cyclones also took the men’s distance medley relay with a 9:59.53 time, while the Longhorns claimed the women’s DMR in 11:24.53.
Tech’s Ruth Usoro collected the final gold medal of the day in the women’s long jump, leaping a school-record 6.54 meters (21’ 5.50”).
Day two will resume at 11:00 a.m. with the 60 meter hurdles as part of the men’s heptathlon. Field events will begin at Noon while running events will start at 1:30 p.m.
