A total of 22 players from eight Big 12 schools will be represented on 17 Major League Baseball teams’ opening day rosters this weekend.

TCU led the way with six players on four teams: LHP Tyler Alexander (Detroit), RHP Jake Arietta (Philadelphia), 3B Matt Carpenter (St. Louis), RHP Steven Crichton (Arizona), 1B Kevin Cron (Arizona) and LHP Alex Young (Arizona).

Oklahoma followed with four alums: RHP Jon Gray (Colorado), SS Jack Mayfield (Houston), RHP Garrett Richards (San Diego) and RHP Burch Smith (Oakland).

Three Oklahoma State Cowboys will play in the American League including right-hander Thomas Hatch (Toronto), left-hander Andrew Heaney (Los Angeles Angels) and utility player Jordy Mercer (Detroit). Heaney will get the opening-day nod for the Angels.

A trio of Texas hurlers earned roster spots: RHP Corey Knebel (Milwaukee), LHP Hoby Milner (Los Angeles Angels) and RHP Brandon Workman (Boston).

Texas Tech (RHP Robert Dugger, Miami & RHP Josh Tomlin, Atlanta) and West Virginia (INF Jedd Gyorko, Milwaukee & 1B Ryan McBroom, Kansas City) each have two players apiece on rosters.

Baylor’s Max Muncy (INF) will again suit up for the Los Angeles Dodgers, while Evan Marshall (RHP) garnered a rotation spot with the Chicago White Sox.

Four others from Big 12 programs were placed on the 10-day injured list: Oklahoma’s Chase Anderson (Toronto), Texas’ Brandon Belt (San Francisco) and Dillon Peters (Baltimore) along with West Virginia’s John Means (Baltimore).

Fourteen of the 22 players on active rosters were All-Big 12 selections during their careers, including a pair of Big 12 Pitchers of the Year in Hatch in 2016 and Heaney in 2012.
