Baylor, K-State & Texas Collect Volleyball Honors

The Big 12 has announced its week nine volleyball award winners for the 2021 season. Kansas State’s Aliyah Carter secures Offensive Player of the Week, while Texas’ Asjia O’Neal procures Defensive Player of the Week and Baylor’s Elise McGhee captures Rookie of the Week.

Carter led the Wildcat offense with 4.50 kills per set in K-State’s road series split against TCU. The sophomore logged her season-best 23 kills in a four-set Friday night win in Fort Worth. It marked Carter’s fourth 20-kill outing of the season and 10th of her career to move her into a tie for third place in K-State history (rally-scoring era). The 2020 Big 12 Freshman of the Year’s 23 kills came at a .327 clip, as each of her four matches with 20 or more kills have come with a .300 efficiency or higher. The 2020 All-Big 12 First Team outside hitter added four service aces, with a season-high three coming in the 3-1 victory. This is Carter’s second Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week award and her seventh overall Big 12 weekly award.

O’Neal put together an incredible blocking performance in a pair of road wins (3-1, 3-0) over Iowa State. The junior had back-to-back matches with nine total blocks, including one solo block in each match and led the Big 12 in total blocks (18) and blocks per set (2.57) during the week. The Southlake, Texas native helped the Longhorns hold Iowa State to a .053 hitting percentage, the lowest opponent hitting percentage in the Big 12 throughout the week. The 2020 First Team All-Big 12 middle blocker added 10 kills, three aces and three digs in the two road matches. This is O’Neal’s first Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week award and her second overall Big 12 weekly award.

McGhee had her career-high in blocks with three against West Virginia in the 3-0 victory. The freshman added three kills and five points in the win. In the second match, she recorded five kills and three digs with a .308 hitting percentage to help Baylor extend its winning streak to six and move up to No. 10 in the national poll this week. This is McGhee’s first Big 12 weekly award.
