Volleyball All-Big 12 Awards Released

Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas and Texas garnered individual accolades to highlight the 2021 All-Big 12 Volleyball awards. The honors were selected by the league’s head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own institution.

Texas claimed two honors as Logan Eggleston was named Big 12 Player of the Year and Jerritt Elliott was voted Coach of the Year, both winning each award for the second-straight season. Baylor’s Hannah Sedwick earned Setter of the Year while Iowa State’s Marija Popovic secured Libero of the Year and Kansas’ Caroline Bien captured Freshman of the Year.

Eggleston is UT’s 13th player of the year honoree. She is second in the Conference with 4.67 points per set and third with an average of 0.48 service aces per set and 3.85 kills per set. She is 10th in hitting percentage in the league at .301. The junior outside hitter was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week four times this season and led Texas to the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.  Eggleston is the first player to repeat as Big 12 Player of the Year since former Longhorn Haley Eckerman won three in a row from 2012-14.

Sedwick was third in the Big 12 with 9.95 assists per set and guided the Bears to a second-best hitting percentage in the league at .287. She totaled 915 assists on the season and helped Baylor grab the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Championship. It is the second time the senior has won the setter award, previously capturing the honor in 2019. Sedwick is the only Baylor player to have won the award since since the award began in 2012.

Popovic is first in the Conference in digs per set (4.65). The senior won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week two times this season and helped lead the Cyclones to their first NCAA Championship appearance since 2019. Popovic is ISU’s 10th player to win Big 12 Libero of the Year and first since Hali Hillegas in 2017.

Bien is the first Jayhawk to garner the freshman accolade and averaged 3.3 points per set and 2.46 digs per set. The outside hitter/libero earned two Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors going back-to-back on September 14 and 21. She assisted KU in earning its 10th NCAA Championship appearance.

In his 21st season, Elliott guided Texas to its fifth-consecutive and 14th overall Big 12 Championship. The Longhorns have won or shared 10 of the last 11 league championships and 13 of the previous 15. UT went 15-1 in conference play and is 24-1 heading into the NCAA Tournament. Elliott was named Big 12 coach of the year for the eighth time in his career.

Seventeen student-athletes were named to the All-Big 12 First Team while seven were chosen to the Second Team. Six freshmen were selected to the All-Big 12 Rookie Team.
