Madrigal Collects Season's First Weekly Honor

IRVING, Texas — Oklahoma senior Tony Madrigal was voted Big 12 Wrestler of the Week by conference coaches after the first weekend of competition.

Madrigal came away with a title in the 133-pound weight division at the Michigan State Open, defeating two wrestlers ranked higher than him. The Oak Park, Illinois native beat No. 5 Lucas Byrd (Illinois) with a quick and dramatic takedown in sudden victory in the semifinals before moving on to win the title by a 4-3 decision over Michigan State's Rayvon Foley. Madrigal opened the meet with wins over Northern Illinois' Mikey Kaminski with a 5-2 decision, Ohio State's Philip Kue by 10-0 majority decision and then advanced to the semifinal with a 4-3 decision over No. 18 Dylan Ragusin from Michigan.

The victory moved Madrigal up to No. 9 in the InterMat 133 weight class rankings, 11 spots higher than his previous rank.
