TCU’s Lauren Heard was tabbed Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and Kansas State’s Serena Sundell was voted the Conference’s Freshman of the Week for games ending Dec. 12, as selected by a five-person media panel.
Heard earned her fifth career Big 12 Player of the Week honor for her 33-point outburst in the Horned Frogs’ wire-to-wire win over then-No. 18 Texas A&M Sunday. She went 18-of-21 from the line, ranking second on the Big 12’s all-time single-game list in free throws made, including a 13-of-14 effort in the fourth quarter as the Aggies fouled in an effort to erase a 29-point second half deficit. The graduate guard added five rebounds, four assists and three steals and shot 58.3% from the field in the 87-75 win.
Sundell averaged 14.0 points while making 58.3 percent of her 3-pointers and adding in 7.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds as the Wildcats earned back-to-back road wins. Sundell had a 16-point, 10-assist double double in the 78-73 win at South Dakota State. The Maryville, Missouri native went 3-of-4 on 3-pointers at Omaha, scoring 12 points as K-State tied the school record for 3-pointers in an 87-56 win. This is the third consecutive week a Kansas State player received Freshman of the Week, and the second time in that span that Sundell earned the honor.
