Big 12 Championship Swimming Events Conclude

UT's Pash, Jiang Named Swimmers of the Meet

After concluding four days of swimming events, the Texas women and men have the lead at the 2021 Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championship at Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin. The diving portion of the competition will begin on Monday, March 1. 

The Longhorns won all 18 men’s swimming events and 17 of the women’s races while setting 14 meet records. Kansas captured the women’s title in the 200 backstroke. 

The UT men compiled 951 points while the women’s team has 854 points. TCU is in second place in the men’s standings (681) and West Virginia is third (661). Kansas (649) is second in the women standings followed by Iowa State (460), TCU (434) and West Virginia (421). 

Kelly Pash was named Women’s Swimmer of the Meet after recording two individual wins, two second place finishes and helping four UT relays to victory. She also set a Championship record in the 200 free. Teammate Alvin Jiang picked up Men’s Swimmer of the Meet with titles in three individual races and three relays. Longhorns Carol Capitani and Eddie Reese were named Women’s and Men’s Swimming Coaches of the Meet.  

Jayhawk senior Manon Manning opened the Saturday finals by winning her first Big 12 title with a time of 1:55.57 in the 200 backstroke. Texas freshman Carson Foster won his third individual medal of the weekend with a 1:40.34 in the men’s race. 

Daniel Krueger captured the 100 freestyle title in a Big 12 Championship record time of 41.33, the fastest time in the nation this season. The performance eclipsed the previous meet record of 41.46 set by Krueger last year. Julia Cook was the women’s champion with a 48.89. It was the second individual victory of the meet for both.
Evie Pfeifer earned the win in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a school and Championship record time of 15:48.65, the third-fastest time in the nation this season. It was the third individual medal for the senior this weekend. David Johnston Jr. picked up the men’s title with a 14:48.09.
 
Freshman Anna Elendt won her second Big 12 race with a 2:06.34 in the 200 yard breaststroke. Caspar Corbeau claimed his second men’s race by clocking a 1:52.52.
 
In the last individual event, freshman Olivia Bray set her second Big 12 Championship record with a time of 1:52.03 in the 200 yard butterfly. It’s the fastest time nationally this season. Jiang swam a 1:41.60 to win his third individual medal.
 
Texas concluded the swimming finals by winning both 400 free relays. The women recorded a time of 3:13.32 while the men clocked a 2:48.48.
 
The top four individuals in each event are awarded All-Big 12 first team designation. The fifth-eighth place finishers are All-Big 12 second team.
