The schedule is set for the final day of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship with No. 1 seed Oklahoma and No. 2 seed Oklahoma State meeting in the title game Saturday at 3 p.m. CT on ESPN2. The two squads just squared off in a three-game series last weekend to determine the Big 12 regular season championship.
Pool play second and third place contests will be played simultaneously at 10:30 a.m. CT. Baylor will face Iowa State in the third place pool play game on Integris Field while Texas meets Texas Tech in the second place pool play game on OGE Energy Field. Both matchups will be available on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
Day 1 Recaps
Game 1: No. 2 Oklahoma State 3, No. 3 Texas 2 (9 innings)
No. 2 seed Oklahoma State won a 3-2 extra-inning showdown over No. 3 seed Texas in the first game of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship. A hot start from Texas DP Taylor Ellsworth put the Longhorns up 2-0 early as she knocked in a run in the first and had another RBI single in the top of the third. Oklahoma State SS Naomi Kiley responded by hitting a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to tie the game 2-2. It was her ninth home run of the season. The game went scoreless for the next 5 1/2 innings. In the bottom of the ninth, the Cowgirls walked it off after a dropped third strike and an error on the throw to first.
Game 2: No. 6 Texas Tech 8, No. 4 Baylor 6
No. 6 seed Texas Tech held off a late Baylor rally to defeat the No. 4 seed Bears 8-6 in game two of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship. Emily Hott began the scoring for BU in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run. The Red Raiders responded as
Arriana Villa tied the game in the top of the third, hitting a ball over the shortstop to score Yvonne Whaley. Peyton Blythe completed the two-out rally for the Raiders with a three-run homer, giving Texas Tech a 4-1 lead. Baylor cut into the Red Raider’s lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from Taylor Ellis to make the score 4-2. The bats got hot again in the seventh inning as Tech put up four more runs. BU followed with four of its own before its comeback attempt fell short.
Game 3: No. 1 Oklahoma 10, No. 4 Baylor 2 (5 innings)
No. 1 seed Oklahoma beat No. 4 seed Baylor 10-2 in five innings during game three of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship. Baylor took an early lead off of an error from the Sooners and an RBI single from Taylor Ellis, her 23rd of the season. It didn’t take long for OU’s offense to come alive. In the bottom of the second inning, with the bases loaded, the Sooners were able to get four runs on the board from a sacrifice fly from Taylon Snow, and a three-run home run from Jayda Coleman. In the bottom of third, Kinzie Hansen hit a solo home run, and Mackenzie Donihoo hit an RBI double to add to the lead. Hansen hit another three-run homer to push the Sooners’ lead to 9-2 in the fourth. OU concluded the game in five innings with a sac-fly from Tiare Jennings.
Game 4: No. 3 Texas 7, No. 5 Iowa State 4
No. 3 seed Texas scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and held off No. 5 seed Iowa State for a 7-4 win in game four of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship. The Longhorns opened up the scoring in the first off an RBI single to right field from Lauren Burke. The teams went scoreless the next two innings before ISU got on the board when Alesia Ranches hit a two-out RBI single to tie the game. UT was quick to respond in the bottom of the fourth with three straight hits and RBIs from Mckenzie Parker and Colleen Sullivan. In the bottom of the sixth, Kaitlyn Washington hit a solo home run followed by a two-run home run by Parker to extend Texas’s lead to 6-1. Allyssa Washington added to the lead with an RBI. The Cyclones didn’t go down without a fight. Kasey Simpson hit an RBI single, followed by Logan Schaben’s RBI and a fielders’ choice to cut the Longhorns’ lead to three.
Game 5: No. 2 Oklahoma State 6, No. 5 Iowa State 5
No. 2 seed Oklahoma State scored five runs in the top of the seventh and then held off No. 5 seed Iowa State in the bottom of the inning for a 6-4 win in game five of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship. The Cowgirls started the scoring in the top of the second with a solo home run from Sydney Pennington. The Cyclones’ all-time home runs leader, Sami Williams, tied it in the bottom of the third with her own dinger. Milaysia Ochoa made a spectacular catch to rob OSU of another homer in the top of the fifth before Williams knocked her second over the fence in the bottom of the inning. Iowa State tacked on another run in the sixth after the Cowgirls missed a throw-down from second. OSU scored all of its runs in the seventh with two outs. Chyenne Factor tripled to right field to bring in Chelsea Alexander and PH Avery Hobson. Consecutive homers by Alysen Febrey and Hayley Busby added three more runs. ISU attempted its own comeback in the bottom of the seventh with two runs off of four hits.
Game 6: No. 1 Oklahoma 8, No. 6 Texas Tech 2
No. 1 seed Oklahoma came out on top over No. 6 seed Texas Tech 8-2 to finish out day one of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship. The Sooners struck first from a solo home run into left field by Lynnsie Elam in the top of the second. In the bottom of the inning, Texas Tech put up two runs off an RBI by Abbie Orrick, and a text book bunt from Kennedy Crites, who brought Orrick home and put the Raiders up 2-1. In the top of the fourth, Kinzie Hansen hit a homer into right field to tie the score followed by Elam hitting a two-run shot to propel the Sooners to a 4-2 lead to end the inning. The Sooners’ offense didn’t stop there. In the top of the fifth inning, Jocelyn Alo added home run number four for the Sooners and increased the lead to 5-2. Hansen added another two-run homer to her night and Tiare Jennings contributed a solo shot in the top of the sixth. The game marked Oklahoma’s sixth this season with five or more home runs. The Sooners will face off against the No. 2 seed Oklahoma State Cowgirls in the championship contest.
