Baylor, Texas and Texas Tech Share Athlete of the Week Merits

IRVING, Texas — Baylor freshman jumper Johnny Brackins was named Big 12 Track & Field Men’s Athlete of the Week while BU sophomore hurdler Ackera Nugent, Texas senior sprinter Julien Alfred and Texas Tech senior jumper Monae’ Nichols split Women’s Athlete of the Week honors.

In only his second collegiate indoor meet, Brackins picked up gold in the long jump at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational after a mark of 25-6 ¼. This length ties Brackins with the No. 3 all-time jump as a Bear and moves him to the No. 2 slot for Baylor jumpers.

The freshman then went on to win his first collegiate triple jump event with a 51-5 ¾ jump, giving him a personal record and also placing him No. 3 on Baylor’s all-time triple jump list. Brackins was awarded Outstanding Male Field Athlete at the meet for his performance while the Baylor men placed third overall with 55 points.

The Bears’ success continued on the women’s side as Nugent took the gold in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.90 seconds, crushing meet, facility and program records while setting a personal best. This came after the sophomore broke the record in the prelims, running an 8.11 to finish first.

Nugent’s 7.9 in the finals tied her at No. 11 in the 60-meter hurdles all-time collegiate competition and places her third in the NCAA. The Kingston, Jamaica native was named Outstanding Female Track Athlete at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational while the Baylor women placed second with 92 points.

Alfred claimed first in the 60-meter dash at the Red Raider Invitational with a time of 7.10, matching her previous Texas program record. Her season opening competition led to the world’s third-fastest time this season and also leads both the Big 12 and the NCAA.

On the field at the Red Raider Invite, Nichols nabbed first in the women’s long jump with a mark of 6.66 meters. Her mark was 49 cm more than second place and gave the senior the top spot in the Conference and the NCAA.
