K-State, OSU, TCU and UT Capture Week 6 Football Awards

TCU’s Quentin Johnston (offensive), K-State’s Josh Hayes (defensive), Oklahoma State’s Tanner Brown (special teams) and Texas’ Quinn Ewers (newcomer) picked up Week 6 football awards. All four earned their first weekly honor.

Johnston helped lead No. 17 TCU to a 38-31 win at No. 19 Kansas with a career-high and team-best 14 receptions, which tied for the most by an FBS player this season. His 24-yard touchdown catch with 1:36 to play provided the winning score. The 14 catches were the most by a Horned Frog since Josh Doctson had 18 in a 55-52 win at Texas Tech in 2015. His 206 yards receiving were the most at TCU since Taj Williams had 210 versus Oklahoma in 2016. Johnston posted his sixth career 100-yard game.

Hayes led No. 20 K-State’s defense in a 10-9 win at Iowa State with 11 tackles, including one for loss, and one pass breakup. The Wildcats held ISU to three field goals and allowed only one series into the red zone. The nine points were the fewest against a Big 12 opponent since the 2018 Texas Tech game (6) and the fewest in a Big 12 road game since the 2016 TCU contest (6). In a tightly contested series against Iowa State, it was the fewest points surrendered to the Cyclones since 2013 (7) and the fewest allowed in Ames since 2003 (0).

Brown led all players in scoring with 15 points in No. 7 Oklahoma State’s 41-31 win over Texas Tech. He was 4-for-4 on field goal attempts to match a career-high and tie for the third-most made field goals in a game in school history. With PATs included, he was 7-for-7 on placekicks in the game with a long of 42 yards. Brown improved to 8-of-8 on field goal attempts this season. He also continued his streak of consecutive PATs made to 62.

Ewers returned after missing over three games due to injury and led Texas to a 49-0 victory over Oklahoma in his first Red River Showdown and third collegiate start. He completed 21-of-31 passes (67.7%) for 289 yards and four touchdowns while leading the Longhorns on seven touchdown drives that averaged 74 yards, including the first four that went for 90, 92, 80 and 79 yards. Ewers averaged almost 17 yards on his four touchdown passes with a long of 24 to TE Ja’Tavion Sanders, one of two he threw to Sanders on the day with the other going for 18 yards. The Texas offensive compiled 585 total yards with 289 in the air and 296 on the ground.
