Texas – Oklahoma State swept the 2022 Big 12 Cross Country Championship team titles Friday morning in Lubbock, Texas at the Chaparral Ridge Cross Country Course. The Cowboys won their third consecutive title and 12
th overall, while the Cowgirls earned back-to-back titles and their fourth team championship.
The Cowgirls set the Big 12 Championship record with a 22-point performance, breaking the previous record of 23 points set by Colorado in 1997. The OSU women had four individuals finish in the top five and six in the top-nine finishers. West Virginia (49), Iowa State (64), Texas (130) and Oklahoma (145) rounded out the top-five in the women’s race.
Ceili McCabe won the 6K in a time of 20:08.4 to secure back-to-back women’s individual titles, improving on her winning time of 20:44.2 from last year’s Big 12 Championship. The 2021 Big 12 Runner of the Year is the only Mountaineer to win the individual title. Oklahoma State’s Taylor Roe (20:10.8), Billah Jepkirui (20:16.0), Natalie Cook (20:21.9) and Gabby Hentemann (20:39.3) completed the top-five in the women’s race.
The Cowboys finished with 21 points, the lowest points total since 2010 when they also won with 19 points. Oklahoma State was led by Alex Maier, who earned his first career Big 12 individual title in the 8K with a time of 23:55.3. Maier is the first Cowboy to capture the title since Hassan Abdi in 2017. The junior finished over 15 seconds ahead of second-place teammate Rory Leonard, after finishing third in last year’s Big 12 Championship.
The OSU men took the top two finishes and five of the top seven to earn their third consecutive team title. In addition to Maier and Leonard, Isai Rodriguez (fifth), Fouad Messaoudi (sixth) and Ryan Schoppe (seventh) all finished in the top seven for the Cowboys while Texas’ Isaac Alonzo (24:13.3) and Iowa State’s Ezekiel Rop (24:13.6) finished third and fourth, respectively. Iowa State (57), Texas (59), Kansas State (123) and Kansas (159) wrapped up the top-five for the men’s results.
The Big 12 honored Special Olympics athletes Elisa Ceniceros and Jared Ball before the National Anthem. Ceniceros participates in bocce, bowling, basketball, track and soccer while Ball participates in basketball, track, swimming and bowling.
