Iowa State’s Ashley Joens (player) and Texas Tech’s Bailey Maupin (freshman) picked up Big 12 women’s basketball awards for Week 2. It is the first honor of the season for both players.
Joens averaged 29.5 points with 9.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in the Cyclones’ 2-0 week. She had the 16
th 30-point game of her career against Columbia, pouring in a career-high seven 3-pointers for a total of 33 points, the most by a Big 12 player this season. The Iowa City, Iowa native added 10 rebounds for her 52
nd career double-double in the 99-76 win. She scored 26 in the 88-85 win at Northern Iowa, tying her then career high with six made 3-pointers. It is her 11
th career Player of the Week selection, tying her with Courtney Paris (OU) for third in Big 12 history.
Maupin averaged 15.0 points and 5.0 rebounds while making 45.5% of 3-pointers. She had 20 points and five rebounds in the Lady Raiders’ 86-85 overtime win over Colorado, going 4-of-6 from 3-point range in the game. She scored 13 points in 21 minutes in Sunday’s win over Louisiana-Lafayette, helping Texas Tech to the team title of the Preseason WNIT and earning a spot on the all-tournament team. She had 12 points against Jackson State on Tuesday, giving her three games of double-digit scoring during the week.
